How about some silkworm satay? Or perhaps nasi lemak with crispy crickets on the side?
Singapore's national food authority has authorized the sale and consumption of 16 species of edible insects in the country, as stated in a public circular dated July 8 addressed to food traders.
"In its statement, SFA announced the immediate allowance of insect and insect product imports from species deemed to pose low regulatory concern."
The SFA has approved various insects, such as locusts, grasshoppers, mealworms, and several beetle species. "These insects and their products can be used for human consumption or as animal feed for food-producing animals," the SFA stated, emphasizing that insects must not be "harvested from the wild."
"SFA stated that there is documentary evidence showing insects are farmed in facilities regulated by the Competent Authority."
CNN has contacted SFA to request additional comment regarding the new regulations.
In Singapore, as in many parts of the world, consuming insects is still seen as something new. Researchers have identified over 2,100 species of edible insects here, which are rich in essential vitamins and minerals. They also provide a sustainable alternative to methane-producing livestock, offering high protein content.
According to a 2022 report from the World Economic Forum, insects are often underestimated as a protein source and a method to combat climate change. Researchers stated, "Our consumption of animal protein contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Insects have the potential to mitigate climate change in various ways."
In some regions of Mexico, grasshopper tacos are enjoyed as a well-liked specialty.
Ants, crickets, and even tarantulas are frequently consumed in neighboring Southeast Asian nations such as Thailand and Cambodia.
However, they are increasingly becoming an intriguing option for human consumption. Local chefs, restaurants, and food and beverage companies are exploring various methods to safely incorporate insects into dishes, such as salted egg crabs with superworms, and into products like protein bars.
"As the insect industry is emerging and insects are a novel food item here, SFA has established a regulatory framework for insects to be approved as food," stated SFA.
